Hello, 2016!

Friday, January 1, 2016

Since 2008, I’ve started the new year not with resolutions, but with a focus word. This word embodies the one thing I want to develop in the twelve months to come.

The word for 2015 was Try, and even though I didn’t Try as well as I probably should have, I still attribute that word for much of 2015’s successes.

(Words for previous years include: Margin, Patience, Kindness, Dare, Write, Commit, Change.)

Coming up with a word for 2016 was difficult. I wrote down a lot of things, but nothing felt quite right. I even toyed briefly with the idea of choosing multiple words—four or so—but I figured that would defeat the purpose of choosing words over resolutions.

Finally, the last week in December, I found my word:

Embrace.

My natural inclination when life is scary is to go dark and possum out. And life right now? Pretty damn scary.

But I think I need to embrace the scary. And the wonderful. And the challenging. And the fan-freaking-tastic.

Here’s to a wonderful 2016!
